Some gun facts to ponder

Here are two interesting gun-related facts (source):

  • Number of accidental gun deaths in the US per year (2009): 0.2 per 100,000.
  • Number of gun-related homicides in Sweden per year (2010): 0.19 per 100,000.

Here’s two more:

  • 500 children accidentally kill themselves (or a friend) with handguns each year (source).
  • 68 police officers were killed by gunfire in 2011 (source).

What do we know from this? More people are killed by guns accidentally in the US per capita than are purposely murdered by guns (again, per capita) in Sweden. And children are 7 times more likely to be killed by guns than police officers.

So. How are guns keeping us safe, again?
