"Finally, Turkey Looks East" | Elif Shafak
Interesting New York Times op-ed. Shafak (a Turkish novelist) suggests Turkey’s pivotal role as an example of a functioning (Muslim-majority, but not “Islamic”) democracy.
I’m fascinated that so little attention has been given to Turkey in discussions of current Middle East events. Turkey is clearly the big winner geopolitically (most of its regional rivals are now very weak), but it also is the best “bridge” between the emerging regimes in Egypt, Tunisia, and elsewhere and democracy.
